How the Strathaven Striders Club Championship is Worked Out.
In working out a scheme for determining the Strathaven Striders Championship several factors have been taken into account.
Recognition that there is a very wide range of ages competing for the Championships is considered by taken into account age categories in the calculation so that all members are competing on as level a playing field as possible regarding age. There are now two separate Mens and Ladies championships so no gender adjustment as such is required.
It is also important to encourage camaraderie within the Club, so ‘Club’ participation events earn recognition by way of double participation points and a multiplier for position points (See Appendix). Distance and type of run are graded for multiplier points.
To allow members to run races more suited to their style or favoured type of run and also to encourage participation in more runs throughout the year, points are also available for up to ten runs selected by the individual.
To encourage ‘ Championship ‘ performances from Club members, extra points are awarded for Personal Best (P.B.) times and for being placed in a run.
The Championship is worked out on a points basis. The person, (lady/ gent), with the highest number of points at the end of the season being the Club Lady/Gent Champion for that year. The Championship year ends 1 week before the AGM, (to allow the compiler time to work out final placing).
There are four categories in which points are gained.
1. Number of runs entered.
2. Position in a run
3. P.B. time for a run
4. Placing in run (i.e. 1st. 2nd. or 3rd)
Any run where the minimum number of club members taking part, (see Appendix) will be designated a club run.
The points to be gained in each category are as follows:
1. Number of runs entered.
Club designated run - 20pts for each run entered up to a max of 10 runs.
Non Club designated run - 10pts for each run entered up to a maximum of 10 runs.
Only ten runs in total will count. i.e. the highest points that can be obtained in this category are by participating in 10 Club designated runs which will attract a total of 200 points.
2. Position in a run.
If full results are available then points are calculated according to position in two ways. The calculation giving the highest score will count.
The first calculation is worked out differently for ladies and gents. For gents it is based on their position with respect to all competitors in the run and for ladies their position with respect to all ladies competing if readily known.
The second calculation is based upon a member’s position within their respective age and gender category, if this has been specified in the race and can be worked out and with the proviso that there is a minimum of 3 competitors in a category.
The points are calculation as follows:
Points awarded = 100 - (Position/Number of competitors)*100 .
For Club designated runs Points awarded are multiplied by a factor of 1.3, 1.5 or 2.0 dependent on the number of club members participating as outlined in the Appendix.
Calculations will be rounded to the nearest whole number.
The three best scores from all runs participated in will count towards the final points total in this category.
3. P.B. time for a run
If a member has a Personal Best time in a run then an extra 25pts. are awarded to the points total. This can be a P.B. for a set distance i.e. 10k, 1/2 marathon etc. or a P.B. for a previously recorded run if the run does not fall into one of the standard accepted distances, i.e. hill runs, long distance runs, trail runs, triathlons and odd mileage races are judged against the previous best in the specific race. If a member moves up into another age category, they must set a benchmark run against which to judge a P.B., unless it is a lifetime P.B.
4. Placing in run
If a member is placed either 1st. 2nd. or 3rd. in their age category or overall then they are awarded an extra 30pts., 20pts. or 10pts., respectively. A place in more than one eligible category may count for placing points. Team placing points are awarded to those individual members contributing to the team placing.
1. It will be up to individuals to ensure that all points being claimed for the Championship are authenticated and submitted in writing to the Championship compiler. This can best be done by submitting a copy of the run’s results if available, though confirmations from other club members or race officials are acceptable. P.B.’s should be authenticated by showing the previous best time for the race or distance being claimed or authenticated by other club members.
2. The Championship compiler will attempt to produce a table periodically, showing the state of play to date.
3. Results and points awarded may be challenged (and no doubt will be), but the decision of the Championship compiler will be final.
